In Hungary, the use of highways and certain main roads is subject to tolls. The system operates with electronic vignettes (“e-vignettes”), meaning there are no physical stickers—usage is registered and checked based on the vehicle’s license plate.
You must have a valid e-vignette before entering any toll road. Several options are available, such as 10-day, monthly, or annual passes, as well as regional (county-level) vignettes.
Key things to know:
- Enforcement is automatic via camera systems
- Driving without a valid vignette results in fines
- Vignettes are linked to the vehicle’s license plate
- The same rules apply to foreign-registered vehicles
If you are renting a car, it’s recommended to check whether the vehicle already includes a valid vignette or if you need to purchase one separately.
